WebDewey 101: Dewey Decimal Classification Tips and Tricks

For the first time ever, PTPL is offering a workshop devoted to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and WebDewey. The workshop will focus on these topics:
- Overview of DDC
- WebDewey basics
- Number building refreshers
- Number building engine
- Standard subdivisions and tables
- Internal add tables
- Number building exercises in WebDewey
- Using the comments to record local practice
WebDewey 101 is geared toward practitioners in school and public libraries. Participants should feel free to bring classification questions and examples of items they routinely handle.
Presenter:
Caroline Saccucci is the Program Manager and Section Head of the Cataloging in Publication (CIP) and Dewey Section in the U.S. Programs, Law, and Literature Division, Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate, Library of Congress. Prior to her appointment as a section head in 2012, she was a CIP Program Specialist and a cataloger in the Geography, Education, and Political Science Section of the U.S. General Division. She was the chair of the ALCTS Public Libraries Technical Services Interest Group (2014-2016) and serves as a member of the ACLTS Cataloging of Children’s Material Committee. She was appointed to the ALCTS Leadership Development Committee (2018-2020). She is the CIP and Dewey Liaison to the ALCTS CaMMS Subject Analysis Committee and the LC representative to the Dewey Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee. She is a Library-appointed member of the IFLA Standing Committee on Subject Access and Analysis. She has co-written articles published in Cataloging and Classification Quarterly and Library Resources & Technical Services. She is the author of a special column in Against the Grain and of a chapter in the forthcoming ALA Publications title Cataloging Correctly for Kids, 6th edition. She has a B.A. in history from Longwood University and an MLS from Simmons College.
Registration (Attendance is limited to 22 participants):
The cost for the all day workshop is $30 for attendees; $20 for students.

Requirements: Participants will need to bring a laptop and their WebDewey account information. If participants do not have WebDewey access, they can get a free 30-day trial subscription here. Please secure access in advance of the workshop.
