Metadata Makeover: Transforming messy data with OpenRefine and MarcEdit

Description:
Develop skills to transform your data and workflows with OpenRefine and MarcEdit in this interactive workshop. Through instructor-led exercises, participants will utilize basic and advanced functions of these programs to build a streamlined workflow to transform messy spreadsheets into valid MARC records. Participants of all experience levels will leave the workshop with demonstrated proficiency in OpenRefine and MarcEdit as well as simple scripts and tasks lists which can be adapted for local use.
Learning Environment:
This interactive workshop will be hosted on Zoom. Attendees will view demonstrations and participate in instructor-led exercises. A course website containing the schedule, source files, exercises, and supplementary materials will be available for participants.

Dom Bortruex is the Manager of Metadata and Resource Description at American University and faculty instructor in Kent State’s MLIS program. He enjoys developing efficient, semi-automated workflows and implementing new technologies to make information accessible and interactive for users.
